Important definitions

A few terms that will pop-up regularly in this guide.

Blockchain

An immutable, secure, transparent and decentralised ledger to record transactions. Cardano operates with a blockchain at its core.

Cryptocurrency

A digital currency in which transactions are verified and recorded using cryptography on a decentralised ledger (see blockchain above). ADA is the cryptocurrency of Cardano.

Epoch

In Cardano, time is calculated in Epochs: an Epoch lasts 5 days.

Exchange

A place (generally a website) to purchase cryptocurrencies.

Wallet

A software to store your cryptocurrencies.
